2e  and SEN Thinkers

A space built for minds that think differently

Many of the young Thinkers we work with are neurodivergent — including those who are twice-exceptional (2e), meaning they are both highly able and have a learning difference such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or dyspraxia. If that sounds like your child, or like you, you're in the right place.

TMU is a neurodivergent-friendly space, and not by accident. We started TMU as a place that would serve this community. Our founder and many of our Scholars are neurodivergent.  The majority of the young thinkers we work with are neurodivergent, and everything about how we run our programmes reflects that.

Our Socratic seminars are built around deep discussion, genuine curiosity, and the freedom to follow an idea wherever it leads. For thinkers who have a deep interest they want to explore, or who want to test their thinking in a new area entirely, this format tends to unlock something that more conventional classroom environments don't.

How we adapt

We don't apply a one-size-fits-all approach. In practice, that means:

  • Non-verbal communication is welcomed, you don't have to speak to participate fully.

  • We don't impose rules that create unnecessary anxiety. Our environment is structured around psychological safety, not compliance.

  • We hold high expectations of every Thinker, because we know what they are capable of, but we build in the flexibility for each person to meet those expectations in their own way.

  • We recognise and celebrate the gains that matter to each individual Thinker - assessing more ways of learning than exams.

Every Thinker is unique

There is no single neurodivergent experience, and we don't treat it as if there is. If you have specific needs, or if you're a parent who would like to talk through how we can support your child to get the most out of a TMU programme, please get in touch before applying. We've worked with many young people in the past to put together individual support plans, and we're always glad to have that conversation early.

You don't need to be twice-exceptional to belong here. TMU welcomes young people with a wide range of special educational needs, whether or not they are identified as highly able. What matters is curiosity — not a particular profile, diagnosis, or set of prior attainments.

You don't need to fit a mould to thrive here. You just need to be curious.

A space to rebuild as well as grow

We know that for many of the young people who find their way to TMU, school has not been a straightforward experience. Many of our Thinkers have been let down, sometimes profoundly, by educational environments that were not equipped to meet their needs. That leaves a mark. It can erode confidence, create anxiety around learning, and make a young person question their own abilities in ways that have nothing to do with their actual potential.

We are acutely aware of this. TMU is designed to be a genuinely safe space. We want every Thinker who arrives carrying the weight of difficult school experiences to feel, perhaps for the first time in an educational setting, that they are seen, valued, and more than capable. Rebuilding that confidence is one of our key goals. For many of our Thinkers, it is where everything else begins.
