Course Description

*** Please note IMPORTANT CHANGE TO PAYMENT INFORMATION at the bottom of this page - please book directly via tutor *** We’ll be exploring the fascinating life of Cleopatra VII, the last Queen of Egypt, including her image, her family, and her relationships with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. The events of her life played an important part in Roman history and she was witness to dramatic turning-points at the end of the Republic. We’ll be exploring the contemporary sources that depict her courage and political acuity, and that paint her as a barbarian queen whose power threatened to destroy Rome, to unravel a picture of her real life and character. Cleopatra has been the subject of stories and legends for the last two millenia, and still presents us with a fascinating and complex image to unravel. We’ll see her from the points of view of Roman politicians, poets, historians and biographers, and consider how these views might have been formed; how the role of a powerful woman was perceived by Roman men; and how the sources represent her for different purposes. We’ll also analyse material remains such as art, coins and inscriptions, to build a broader picture of how she might have been seen by Egyptians. This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in the subject, and supports and adds context to the GCSE Ancient History depth study component on Cleopatra, and the A-Level Ancient History depth study component on the Breakdown of the Late Roman Republic. *** IMPORTANT PAYMENT INFORMATION *** The cost for the course is £66. Cancellation Policy

All our classes require a minimum number of Thinkers to run. As soon as enough Thinkers sign up you will receive an e-mail from the Scholar running your class with a link to your virtual classroom. If we cannot gather enough thinkers to run a class we will, sadly, have to cancel and/or reschedule. If this is the case, we will e-mail 24 hours before your class is scheduled to start to let you know. To help ensure that your class does take place, please invite others to join you. We find that word of mouth is the best way to let new families know about Thinkers Meet Up. Thank you!
