Course Description
*** Please note IMPORTANT CHANGE TO PAYMENT INFORMATION at the bottom of this page - please book directly via tutor *** What was Sparta really like? This course will explore some of the stories told about Sparta, where they came from, and what they can tell us about how others perceived this famously furtive society. We’ll be investigating what we can really know about life in Spartan society and in the military, and what evidence we can piece together to build an understanding of the life and concerns of Sparta itself. We’ll follow Spartan involvement in the affairs of Greece, including wars against other Greek states and its role as leader of the Peloponnesian League and its influence at Delphi. We’ll also be looking at what the other Greeks thought about the Spartan slave-nation of Helots, and the unusually (for that time and place) liberated role of women! We’ll be looking at the descriptions of Sparta from sources such as Xenophon, Plutarch, Thucydides, Herodotus, Plato, Pausanias and Diodorus, as well as a few fragments from Sparta itself. Was Sparta really the military machine of its reputation, or was this a carefully curated mirage? We’ll also see how historians have pieced the evidence together to create a view of what it was really like. This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in the subject, and supports the A-Level Ancient History depth study, The Politics and Society of Sparta. *** IMPORTANT PAYMENT INFORMATION *** The cost for the course is £66. Cancellation Policy
All our classes require a minimum number of Thinkers to run. As soon as enough Thinkers sign up you will receive an e-mail from the Scholar running your class with a link to your virtual classroom. If we cannot gather enough thinkers to run a class we will, sadly, have to cancel and/or reschedule. If this is the case, we will e-mail 24 hours before your class is scheduled to start to let you know. To help ensure that your class does take place, please invite others to join you. We find that word of mouth is the best way to let new families know about Thinkers Meet Up. Thank you!
