Course Description
*** Please note IMPORTANT CHANGE TO PAYMENT INFORMATION at the bottom of this page - please book directly via tutor *** Did Claudius’ fourth wife Agrippina really plan his murder, to put her son Nero on the throne? What happened to Claudius’ own son Britannicus? It seems there’s a lot of plotting and intrigue going on in the Roman Imperial court, and Nero is definitely the winner (until he isn’t). In this course we’ll be exploring the Roman sources on the end of Claudius’ reign and on Nero’s, including some contemporary insights as well as later Roman historians looking back on the period (with horror). Some of the themes we’ll be exploring include whether Nero was really insane; the role, and portrayal, of powerful women in the Imperial court; political stability and instability. We’ll also be looking at a wide range of sources and assessing their reliability, and possible biases, to work out as much of the real picture as we can. This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in the subject, and supports the A-Level Ancient History period study on Rome (the Julio-Claudian Emperors). *** IMPORTANT PAYMENT INFORMATION *** The cost for the course is £66. Cancellation Policy
All our classes require a minimum number of Thinkers to run. As soon as enough Thinkers sign up you will receive an e-mail from the Scholar running your class with a link to your virtual classroom. If we cannot gather enough thinkers to run a class we will, sadly, have to cancel and/or reschedule. If this is the case, we will e-mail 24 hours before your class is scheduled to start to let you know. To help ensure that your class does take place, please invite others to join you. We find that word of mouth is the best way to let new families know about Thinkers Meet Up. Thank you!
