Course Description

*** Please note IMPORTANT CHANGE TO PAYMENT INFORMATION at the bottom of this page - please book directly via tutor *** Revenge is central to many Greek stories and to many historical events. In this course we’ll be exploring some engaging examples from myth, literature and history, and looking into why this was so important to the Greeks. We’ll also be looking at examples of reconciliation, and at what the philosophers had to say about it! From myth and literature we’ll be exploring stories including divine vengeance on humans, and why; revenge and reconciliation in stories and plays (including Medea and Jason, Hecuba, Ajax, and Philoctetes); curses on entire families and their descendants, and how these were ended (including the House of Atreus and the family of Croesus of Lydia). From history we’ll be looking at case studies of why some Greek states went to war to avenge an insult or lack of respect, and how societies that do this can find reconciliation. We’ll also look at some fun case studies involving individual Greeks. We’ll then have a look at what some Greek philosophers recommended as ways of reconciling peacefully! *** IMPORTANT PAYMENT INFORMATION *** The cost for the course is £66. Cancellation Policy

All our classes require a minimum number of Thinkers to run. As soon as enough Thinkers sign up you will receive an e-mail from the Scholar running your class with a link to your virtual classroom. If we cannot gather enough thinkers to run a class we will, sadly, have to cancel and/or reschedule. If this is the case, we will e-mail 24 hours before your class is scheduled to start to let you know. To help ensure that your class does take place, please invite others to join you. We find that word of mouth is the best way to let new families know about Thinkers Meet Up. Thank you!
