Utopia: Critical thinking and Society
Age 13-16, meets 5 times, Fridays 9:30
Service Description
Could we build the perfect world? Living a good life, building the perfect society - these are the BIG projects that have driven much philosophical debate throughout history. In this class we will try to build a Utopia piece by piece. Each week we will discuss and debate one aspect of building an ideal society - from the individual - the micro - to the social - the macro. In our discussions we will be introduced to various philosophers, who might argue against our views. We will rely on Plato's Republic as a starting point for our conversation. Will we come to agree with Plato? Will we find flaws in his views? Each week we will take on a different topic, and link our discussions to recent events, to literature, and to Thinker's unique interests. We might, for example, link our discussion to gaming, or to sports, or to art! The topics below are starting points for our discussions, but class content will change to adapt to Thinkers’ interests. 1. Leadership 2. Religion 3. Entertainment 4. Sports 5. Food
Cancellation Policy
All our classes require a minimum number of Thinkers to run. As soon as enough Thinkers sign up you will receive an e-mail from the Scholar running your class with a link to your virtual classroom. If we cannot gather enough thinkers to run a class we will, sadly, have to cancel and/or reschedule. If this is the case, we will e-mail 24 hours before your class is scheduled to start to let you know. To help ensure that your class does take place, please invite others to join you. We find that word of mouth is the best way to let new families know about Thinkers Meet Up. Thank you!
