Service Description
*** Please see bottom of the page for IMPORTANT PAYMENT INFORMATION - please book directly via tutor *** Yes there will be pictures with funny captions too, but mostly this class will be about "elements of a culture or system of behaviour passed from one individual to another by imitation or other non-genetic means" (Oxford Dictionary). Which will be at least as much fun. We'll be looking at trends in the ancient world, their origins if we know them, and how they were transmitted. It's not quite identity politics and culture wars, but culture and fashions have always been used as ways for groups and individuals to identify what is important to them or how they want to be seen. Some of the trends we'll be looking at include: - Pets - lap dogs, hares, swans, fish, peacocks, deer and more - Clothes - who dressed like a Spartan, who wore flowing perfumed robes, who wore nothing and lived in a barrel...? - Hair - long or short? Fancy or plain styles? Facial hair or not? - Frugality and extravagance in different places and times - Ostentatious demonstrations of ways to live and ways to die - Philanthropy and public display - Provincials trying to look like Romans, Romans trying to look like Greeks... and lots more! *** IMPORTANT PAYMENT INFORMATION *** The cost for the course is £66. Cancellation Policy
All our classes require a minimum number of Thinkers to run. As soon as enough Thinkers sign up you will receive an e-mail from the Scholar running your class with a link to your virtual classroom. If we cannot gather enough thinkers to run a class we will, sadly, have to cancel and/or reschedule. If this is the case, we will e-mail 24 hours before your class is scheduled to start to let you know. To help ensure that your class does take place, please invite others to join you. We find that word of mouth is the best way to let new families know about Thinkers Meet Up. Thank you!
