Service Description

This class will take Thinkers through a survey of some of the most influential political philosophers in the West. During each class we will briefly discuss the life of the philosopher we are learning about to give us a context to understand their ideas. We will then delve into their philosophy through thought experiments and Socratic discussion. Our goal will be to develop an awareness of each philosopher's thought system as we sharpen our own analytical skills. We will use the insights of each philosopher to analyse problems around us and gain new insights. Each week Thinkers will analyse an assigned reading, make verbal and written contributions (through the chat), and discuss current events with the aid of political philosophy. Thus, not only will Thinkers learn about philosophy, they will develop analytical and communications skills, practice synthesising ideas and communicating their own views. Suggested schedule (this might be altered to fit Thinkers' interests and background) *Please note, this is an updated philosopher list Week 1 - Philosophy - a quick introduction Week 2 - Pre-socratic philosophers Week 3 - Socrates Week 4 - Plato & Aristoltle Week 5 - the Cynics Week 6 - The Stoics Week 7 - Medieval Philosophers Week 8 - Hobbes Week 9 - Locke and Rousseau Week 10 - Knowledge and review All students who complete at least five sessions in this course (cover 5 philosophers) are invited to work on a philosophy essay with the instructor after the term. You can sign up for the entire series, for a slightly reduced price, or book individual courses. To book for an individual course, please PayPal thinkersmeetup@protonmail.com £12 per class, stating which class you are booking for and the name and age of your Thinker.

Cancellation Policy

We will do our utmost to ensure every booked class takes place. However, we strongly believe in the value of conversation between thinkers. Thus, we will not run a class with less than the minimum number of students. If we do not have a full group 24 hours before the class is set to start we will, sadly, cancel the session, refund all participants, and seek to run the class at a different time. Our full booking and cancellation policy can be found in our Terms and Services.
