*** Please note IMPORTANT CHANGE TO PAYMENT INFORMATION at the bottom of this page - please book directly via tutor *** BLOCK II: MORE METAMORPHOSES, AND FASTI, TRISTIA AND EX PONTO In this class we will be meeting the Roman poet Ovid, learning about his life (including what it was like to experience life under the Emperor Augustus, and his exile from Rome), to place his work in its wider context. We will be looking in particular at his spectacular epic, the Metamorphoses. Brilliant, witty and ingenious, Ovid transforms the old Greek and Roman myths and turns them into glittering tales which still sound fresh and exciting, and have influenced literature over many centuries. The stories of Daedalus and Icarus, Pygmalion, Perseus and Andromeda, Orpheus and Eurydice, Hercules, and many more are interwoven to create a gripping narrative and a novel telling. Linked together by the theme of transformation, the stories cover a vast number of mythical topics. If we have time we will also look at some of Ovid's other work, such as the Fasti and Amores, otherwise we will look at them next term! *** IMPORTANT PAYMENT INFORMATION *** The cost for the course is £66.
