Course Description
Thinkers who want to understand our world? Join us for an amazing class introducing insights from sociology. Sociology for Teens: Society, Power & Modern Life is a 5-session online course introducing students to the hidden structures shaping everyday life. Through discussion, case studies, media analysis, and debates, students learn to think critically about society and question ideas often taken for granted. Our sessions will aim to cover these topics - although we might move around to follow Thinkers' specific interests. Gender, Relationships & the Changing Family Explore how gender roles, family structures, and ideas about relationships have changed over time, and how society shapes expectations around identity and behaviour. Technology, Social Media & Modern Society Examine algorithms, online identity, influencer culture, surveillance, and how technology affects relationships, attention, and power. Consumer Culture & Everyday Life Investigate trends, branding, status symbols, fast fashion, and how tastes and lifestyles are shaped by media, class, and social pressure. Institutions, Crime & Social Change Study crime, deviance, protest movements, surveillance, and how societies maintain order — and how social change happens. Research Methods & Review Learn how sociologists study society through surveys, interviews, observations, and experiments, before designing a mini research project. Ideal for curious teens interested in humanities, politics, psychology, media, or current affairs. Ages 13–17.
Cancellation Policy
All our classes require a minimum number of Thinkers to run. As soon as enough Thinkers sign up you will receive an e-mail from the Scholar running your class with a link to your virtual classroom. If we cannot gather enough thinkers to run a class we will, sadly, have to cancel and/or reschedule. If this is the case, we will e-mail 24 hours before your class is scheduled to start to let you know. To help ensure that your class does take place, please invite others to join you. We find that word of mouth is the best way to let new families know about Thinkers Meet Up. Thank you!
