Could we build the perfect world? Living a good life, building the perfect society - these are the BIG projects that have driven much philosophical debate throughout history. In this class we will try to build a Utopia piece by piece. Each week we will discuss and debate one aspect of building an ideal society - from the individual - the micro - to the social - the macro. Each week we will take on a different topic, and link our discussions to recent events, to literature, and to Thinker's unique interests. We might, for example, link our discussion to gaming, or to sports, or to art! The list below is indicative of the material to be covered, but there is flexibility to adapt as new events develop. Week 1: The idea of utopia. Should we strive for perfection? Or is perfection dangerous? Should we limit some ideas? Week 2: The Good Life - How do we want to live? Is it better to have freedom, or to be safe? Should we tell other people how to live? Week 3: The Best Government - Who should lead us and how? Do we want an enlightened dictator? A full democracy? Week 4: Who should be part of our country? Let's discuss immigration and citizenship. Week 5: What should we learn? A discussion on education. * Please note, if you have done this class before and want to repeat it, you are welcome to do so at a heavily discounted fee. Please email me for details. ** Please note there is no class on half-term - Oct 25th
We will do our utmost to ensure every booked class takes place. However, we strongly believe in the value of conversation between thinkers. Thus, we will not run a class with less than the minimum number of students. If we do not have a full group 24 hours before the class is set to start we will, sadly, cancel the session, refund all participants, and seek to run the class at a different time. Our full booking and cancellation policy can be found in our Terms and Services.
